Keen Games

Keen Games is the independent studio in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, that develops and publishes Enshrouded on its own Holistic Engine. Founded in 2005 by Antony Christoulakis and Jan Jöckel, whose roots go back to Neon Studios in 1993, it is led by CEO Jan Jöckel with Christoulakis as Creative Director and has about 75 team members.

Keen Games made Enshrouded: it is an independent studio in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, that both develops and publishes the game (Steam, developer and publisher "Keen Games GmbH"), on its own Holistic Engine. Its co-founders are Jan Jöckel, the CEO, and Antony Christoulakis, the Creative Director, who began as Neon Studios in 1993 and became Keen Games in 2005 (hessenschau, May 14, 2025). Keen's own page counts 75 team members (read Oct 20, 2026). Christoulakis appears in Keen's "Road to Release" video of Jan 21, 2026, introduced as "our creative director", marking the second anniversary of early access and "the 5 million players mark". Enshrouded is the first game Keen published itself, after years of making games for other publishers, including Portal Knights.

History

Christoulakis and Jöckel started making games as schoolboys in Darmstadt, founded Neon Studios with three friends in 1993 and renamed the company Keen Games in 2005 (hessenschau, May 14, 2025). Keen's about page says the founders had also worked together as part of JoWood AG (Keen Games). Keen's press text calls it "one of Germany's leading independent video game developers", one that "since their inception in 2005" has been "crafting their tools and technology, including their proprietary voxel engine" (Keen Games press release, Oct 14, 2026).

Keen's earlier games, by its own list: Anno 1701 DS (2006), Anno: Dawn of Discovery for Wii and DS (2009), Royal Revolt (2012) and Royal Revolt 2 (2014), Olympus Rising (2016) and Portal Knights (2016, published by 505 Games). Portal Knights won Best German Game and Best Online Game at the Deutscher Computerspielpreis (Keen Games).

Portal Knights led straight to Enshrouded. In Keen's 2024 AMA recap, asked why a voxel world, the answer is that building and freedom to explore were essential, "so it was important from the beginning to create a game on the technical foundation of our voxel engine", and that "luckily our team already had a lot of experience working on our last game Portal Knights, which was also voxel based".

Enshrouded

Keen revealed Enshrouded on May 3, 2023 as "a survival action-RPG from the makers of Portal Knights" (Keen, May 3, 2023), released it in early access on Jan 24, 2024 ("We started this project 4 years ago"; Keen, Jan 24, 2024) and brought it to 1.0 on PC and PlayStation 5 on Oct 15, 2026. Early access ran through 8 major updates, 14 patches and 42 hotfixes (Keen, Oct 14, 2026); see Early Access Updates and 1.0 Release. Its success let Keen make the world "a lot bigger than we originally thought ... we're not a big team" (Keen, Jan 28, 2025).

The stakes were high. Christoulakis told Wccftech, "We've bet the future of the studio on it" (Wccftech, Oct 13, 2026). Hessenschau reported about 2 million euros of public funding and total costs "in the double-digit millions", partly from international investors (May 14, 2025). Keen names those investors: a 2021 round with Hiro Capital and Tencent, plus a German government games grant the same year (Keen Games).

The team

Keen's about page counts 75 team members with an average of 12 years' experience. Hessenschau described over 70 employees in May 2025, most working remotely (in Berlin, Sweden, France and India) around a small headquarters in Frankfurt-Sachsenhausen (hessenschau, May 14, 2025). Christoulakis still calls it "a moderately sized team" (Wccftech, Oct 13, 2026).

Keen's videos put faces to the team. In the Update 8 combat video of Apr 9, 2026, Francois introduces himself as "community lead" and is joined by "one of our combat designers, David". Senior game designer Christoph presents the Dev Update of Oct 23, 2025, and says the team "now has multiple developers who are dedicated to all aspects of combat" (Keen, Oct 23, 2025). Community manager Andrew "Toast" Eldred spoke for Keen about the dragon rework (PCGamesN, Aug 20, 2026).

Art director Jonas shows how the world is built in "Creating the world of Enshrouded", made before the early access launch. With a voxel brush he drops in a foundation, mountains and "a huge sword on top", and explains that "no matter what geometry we add or how the objects overlap the result will always be a clean voxel mesh", over the editor footage. Keen's map is handcrafted, with algorithms used only to support the designers (Map and Regions).

The Holistic Engine

Enshrouded runs on Keen's own engine. In "Performance Improvements for 1.0" the narrator introduces "the tech team that works on Holistic, the in-house engine that's powering Enshrouded", and Julien, "the Technical Director here at Keen Games", says Enshrouded is "a very demanding game featuring a fully modifiable open world with a huge view distance", which "is why we have our custom engine Holistic, without which Enshrouded wouldn't exist". The official FAQ calls it the "Holistic Engine, specifically designed and optimized to build Enshrouded" (enshrouded.com/FAQ). Its work for 1.0, from the brick renderer to faster shader compilation, is on Platforms and System Requirements.

Awards

Enshrouded won Best Game Design, Best German Game and Best Technical Achievement at the German Developer Awards 2024, where Keen was named Studio of the Year (Keen, Dec 4, 2024). At the Deutscher Computerspielpreis 2025 it won Best German Game, the main prize of 100,000 euros, and Best Innovation and Technology (heise, May 14, 2025). More on Reception and Players.

Music

The Enshrouded soundtrack is by Alex Röder, Armin Haas and Matthias Wolf; Keen released it on Feb 2, 2024 with 66 tracks (Keen, Feb 2, 2024). No composer credit for music added later was found, as of Oct 21, 2026. See Price and Editions.

What comes next

Keen plans to keep working on Enshrouded for years. In "Road to Release" Christoulakis says "it's not the end but another beginning for us", that "development will continue for years to come", with free additions as well as paid expansions, and that "there is a world beyond Embervale". At launch Jöckel said "Reaching 1.0 is a proud moment for everyone at Keen Games, but there's still so much more we want to do with Enshrouded" (Keen Games press release, Oct 14, 2026). The Xbox Series X|S version is planned for spring 2027, and cross-play has no date, as of Oct 21, 2026 (Platforms and System Requirements).
