Building Guide
Building in Enshrouded is voxel based: inside a Flame Altar's area you place blocks, props and roofs with the Construction Hammer, terrain can be dug and raised anywhere, and since 1.0 the Airborne Architect skill lets you fly around your base while you build.
In Enshrouded you build with voxels: place a Flame Altar to claim an area, then use the Construction Hammer to lay blocks, roofs and props anywhere inside it, while the terrain itself can be dug, flattened and raised anywhere in Embervale. The biggest building change of 1.0 is a skill. In Keen's 1.0 highlights of Oct 15, 2026, Airborne Architect "lets you fly around your base while you build, placing pieces from the angle you actually need", and "Roofs will no longer be the final boss of Enshrouded's base building"; the frames show the skill's node in the tree, then a builder placing a block in a settlement. Nothing in Keen's changelogs describes structural integrity rules, so a build only has to look right. Enshrouded's store page sums it up: "build anything, anywhere in a fully terraformable land" (Steam).
Quick facts

How building works: voxels, altars and terraforming
Embervale is made of voxels throughout. Keen's art director Jonas shows in "Creating the world of Enshrouded" that "the world geometry of Enshrouded is entirely made out of 3D voxels", so however shapes overlap, "the result will always be a clean voxel mesh". The game's own blocks work the same way: a player's walls merge into the terrain, and the pickaxe and rake carve both.
Building needs a Flame Altar. It costs five stones and you meet it soon after leaving the first cave; you can only build structures where an altar is active (PC Gamer, Jan 24, 2024). Upgrading the Flame raises how many altars you can keep. At 1.0 the next Flame level, needed before Cinder's Cradle, raises the cap to 15, and Flame level 11, after the final threat, to 16; Flame level 11 also lets altars push back the Shroud, and the world settings can lower the level needed for that (1.0 changelog). The Flame Altar and Flame Levels page has the details.
What 1.0 changed for builders: "Most areas that were previously marked as no-build zones have been made fully accessible for player-built bases", and undoing terraforming works with a full backpack, though the resources are not returned then (1.0 changelog).
The building tools
- Construction Hammer. The main tool for blocks and shapes. 1.0 shows a hint to use it instead of placing blocks from the action bar, because "using the Construction Hammer is just faster and more convenient".
- Material Catalog. Since Forging the Path (Apr 21, 2026), wielding the hammer opens a catalog of every building material you own, and pointing at a block or terrain samples its material with one button.
- Rake. Flattens and shapes terrain; since Wake of the Water its radius can be adjusted, its cursor depth shifted to dig ditches and irrigation canals, and a fine-tune mode adds precision (Keen).
- Overgrowth tool. Adds or removes ivy and other overgrowth on blocks; crafted at the Farmer with Revelwood materials (Keen, Jan 28, 2025).
- Decay tool. Adds or removes ruined edges on walls; crafted at the Collector with Nomad Highlands materials (same update).
- First-person camera. With the hammer, a prop or the new tools in hand, the camera toggles to first person, "especially in tight spaces" (same update).
- Airborne Architect. The 1.0 skill "at the center of the skill tree that enables building in a free-flying mode. All of the scaffolding experts are out of a job now" (1.0 changelog). See Skill Tree.
Decorative props rotate on all axes since Jan 28, 2025, but furniture you use (the Flame Altar, beds, benches, chairs, thrones) turns only around the vertical axis, and blocks and shapes still rotate in 90-degree steps (Keen).
Materials, magic chests and storage
Blocks are crafted at the survivors' stations from what you gather; every block recipe gives 100 blocks and every roof recipe 50 since Nov 10, 2025 (Keen). Collecting all of a region's building blocks completes that region's item set in the journal. The Crafting Stations and Materials and Ores pages list where materials come from.
Since Forging the Path you can "build directly from magic chests", pulling "from any materials in the nearby chests even if there aren't any of them in your inventory", Keen's highlights say. The same update added the Quick Stack Station, which empties your backpack into the magic chests around it.
1.0 added chest upgrades in place: "Just press enhance button and tadam, your chest is magic now", without emptying it, and chests and map markers can be renamed, Keen's highlights video shows. Regular 24-slot storage chests and magic chests can also be crafted earlier (1.0 changelog).
Water in your base
Wake of the Water, on Nov 10, 2025, brought simulated water: "You can bring water to your builds and even use waters to improve your crafting", with tools to "generate, carry, drain water, and siphon or fill up lakes, puddles, and barrels", Keen's highlights say, warning that there are limits to how much water the game can simulate. Water barrier walls, placed vertically or horizontally, keep water out, for "a secret entrance to your castle or a full-on Atlantis".
Only water placed, removed or redirected in a base is saved, and Flame Altars always keep oxygen bubbles around them, so you can teleport and respawn safely underwater (Keen). A base can hold up to 50 water dispensers at the highest Flame level.
Decoration and comfort
Keen has added decoration in nearly every update. The first one, Hollow Halls (Mar 26, 2024), brought round doors and windows "for those enchanted by mystical worlds and cozy underground homes", sitting on furniture, and potted plants from Emily the Farmer. Pact of the Flame (Jan 28, 2025) added "More than 70 new or previously unavailable props", from leather sofas to a vault door, and plates and coasters for putting food on tables (Keen). 1.0 added more props the community asked for, red marble columns and arches, and all night plants as potted plants (1.0 changelog).
Furniture and decoration also do a job: resting in your base or a shelter gives the rested buff, and comfort from furniture, lights and decorations lengthens it (Game Rant, Oct 16, 2026). Playing an instrument at the campfire adds to it too (Keen, Jun 5, 2024). Food and Cooking covers the other half of preparing for a trip.
Beds and shelter for survivors
Since Souls of the Frozen Frontier (Nov 5, 2024), the survivors you rescue walk around your base on daily routines and look for the beds you assign them at night; "Their happiness is now tied to having a sheltered bed", Keen's video says, so give each one a bed under a roof. Assistant crafters can staff secondary bases, and townsfolk move in as well.
At 1.0 you can set how far each survivor roams before placing them (down to 2 meters), and survivors got better at beds, chairs and spiral staircases (1.0 changelog). A base holds up to 128 farm animals, fish included. See Survivors.
Where to build: base locations
Players build almost anywhere. Keen's 1.0 launch trailer gives a few seconds to player builds, each credited on screen with "PLAYER BUILD BY": a red-roofed tower in a forest, a glowing underground home, a castle bridge over a river and a garden courtyard before a cathedral.
PC Gamer's guide to the best base locations in 1.0 (Andrea Shearon, Oct 20, 2026) picks, among others:
| Region | Spot | Why, per PC Gamer |
|---|---|---|
| Springlands | Fort Kelvin | An abandoned town with a square, tunnels and a tower to restore |
| Springlands | The pond west of Fort Kelvin | An island in the water; patrols pass on the path |
| Revelwood | The waterfall beside Glenwood's End | A secret alcove behind it |
| Revelwood | Blue Goblet Tavern | A single building on a sunny hilltop, ore and clay nearby |
| Nomad Highlands | Top of the Pillars of Creation | An altar there is a fast travel point for the south; copper nearby |
| Kindlewastes | Shorewatch | A manageable town with a tower for glider jumps |
| Albaneve Summits | A lakeside cabin northwest of Hermit Lodgings | Quiet, by a lake |
| Veilwater Basin | Riverreach and Driftwood Wake, on Dragondream Lake | Big towns with waterwheels and waterfalls, good for fishing |
Practical points from Keen's own systems: build near the resources you will need, put altars where you want fast travel points, and remember that bases do not need defenses. The Map and Regions page shows where each region lies.
What you cannot do (yet)
Angled voxels and free 3D rotation of building props were asked for in Keen's Reddit AMA of Spring 2024. Keen answered that angled blocks are "tricky from the technical side" but liked, and that full 3D rotation "isn't currently planned" because of the controls involved; decorative props got full rotation in Jan 2025, blocks did not. A creative mode is also not in the game: in the same recap Keen said one was "not currently on our road map".
There is no structural integrity: no Keen changelog or support article describes load or support rules, only that 1.0 rebalanced explosive bombs against hard building blocks (1.0 changelog). There is also a world limit on factories, which "very few players should ever encounter".
Sharing what you build
Finished bases can be uploaded through Adventure Sharing, and Sparkworks adds switches, traps and puzzles to them; see Adventure Sharing and Sparkworks. The camera item crafted at the workbench takes the screenshots for the listing.
Frequently asked questions
How do you build in Enshrouded? In Enshrouded you place a Flame Altar, then use the Construction Hammer to place blocks, shapes and roofs within the altar's area and the props menu for furniture. Materials can be taken straight from nearby magic chests.
Can you build anywhere in Enshrouded? You can build wherever you place an active Flame Altar, and since 1.0 most former no-build zones accept bases. Terraforming with a pickaxe or rake works anywhere in Embervale.
Does Enshrouded have structural integrity? No structural integrity rules are documented for Enshrouded; Keen's changelogs and support articles describe none, so blocks do not need supports.
How do I fly while building in Enshrouded? Unlock Airborne Architect, a 1.0 skill at the center of Enshrouded's skill tree, which lets you build in a free-flying mode around your base.
Do enemies attack bases in Enshrouded? No. Enemies in Enshrouded attack players, not bases or buildings, so a base needs no defenses; Keen has called base invasions an idea it would need to think more about.
How many Flame Altars can you have in Enshrouded? In Enshrouded 1.0 you can have up to 15 Flame Altars after the Flame upgrade needed for Cinder's Cradle, and 16 at Flame level 11; earlier Flame levels allow fewer.
Can you build underwater in Enshrouded? Yes. Since Nov 10, 2025, Enshrouded's water barrier walls keep water out of rooms, and Flame Altars keep oxygen around them underwater.

EnshroudedEnshrouded is Keen Games' solo and co-op survival action RPG set in Embervale, a voxel-built kingdom swallowed by a fog called the Shroud. It left Steam early access with its 1.0 release on Oct 15, 2026, launching on PlayStation 5 the same day, with Xbox Series X|S planned for spring 2027. -
Flame Altar and Flame LevelsIn Enshrouded the Flame Altar is your base's heart and a fast travel point; upgrading the Flame raises every player's stats, Shroud time and the number of altars you may place. 1.0 adds a Flame level needed for Cinder's Cradle (15 altars) and Flame level 11 after the final threat (16 altars, and altars push the Shroud back).
-
Skill TreeEnshrouded has no fixed classes. Every Flameborn spends skill points (one source is character level, the other is destroyed Shroud Roots) in one shared tree whose areas the 1.0 menu labels Survivor, Beastmaster, Ranger, Assassin, Trickster, Athlete, Barbarian, Warrior, Guardian, Battlemage and Healer, and can respec at a Flame Altar for runes. -
Crafting StationsCrafting in Enshrouded starts in your backpack, moves to the workbench, and then to the stations and factories the rescued survivors teach you (Smelter, Forge, Loom, Tanning Station, Ectoplasm Press, Charcoal Kiln, Athanor and more), which can pull materials from nearby magic chests and, since Update 7, run on water wheels or windmills. 1.0 cut early recipe costs and sped up factories. -
Materials and OresEnshrouded's materials come in tiers that follow its regions: copper in the Revelwood, tin and then iron around the Nomad Highlands and Kindlewastes, with rarer resources in the Shroud, the Hollow Halls and the later regions. Every material shows its item level and a hint where to find it, and 1.0 raised mining yields and made stone easier to mine. -
Food and CookingOn default settings, food in Enshrouded does not keep you from starving: it gives timed buffs (more health, stamina, mana, regeneration or attributes) in a limited number of food slots, and hunger only exists if the world turns it on, as the Survival preset does. The rested buff, from shelter and a comfortable base, raises stamina, and cold, wet and exposed states drain it.
