Food and Cooking
On default settings, food in Enshrouded does not keep you from starving: it gives timed buffs (more health, stamina, mana, regeneration or attributes) in a limited number of food slots, and hunger only exists if the world turns it on, as the Survival preset does. The rested buff, from shelter and a comfortable base, raises stamina, and cold, wet and exposed states drain it.
In Enshrouded food is a buff, not a hunger meter: on default settings you never starve, and each meal gives a temporary bonus such as more health, more stamina or mana, faster regeneration or more strength, filling one of a limited number of food slots. Keen Games' support tips say it plainly: food "gives bonus stats for a short time", and players should pick food that suits how they play, mage, warrior or ranger, and take some along when exploring (Keen support). Food matters more since Update 7. In Keen's Dev Update video of Oct 23, 2025, senior designer Kristoff explains that passive health regeneration was so high that players just stepped out of fights and waited, so it was cut, with stamina and mana regeneration lowered slightly too, to make health something you prepare for "by crafting potions, eating appropriate meals, and so on". Where ingredients come from is on Farming, Fishing and Animals.

Food slots and buffs
Every meal fills a food slot for a while, and the number of slots is limited; since Update 7 the game warns you if you eat with every slot full (Keen, Nov 10, 2025). The skill Dessert Stomach adds a slot (Game Rant includes it with Sweet Tooth in its greatsword build, Apr 25, 2026), and Last Meal keeps food buffs through death at half their remaining time (Keen, Nov 10, 2025). Since 1.0 the Puke Potion, a personal recipe, removes every active food buff, "Not a pleasant experience..." (Keen, Oct 14, 2026). How long buffs last can be set from half to double in the world settings.
Keen's notes name a few dishes and what they do: Update 8 added stamina regeneration to Candied Ginger, more stamina regeneration and maximum stamina to Vegetable Puree, a 9-minute buff to Honey Baked Banana, and slightly lowered Purple Berry Cake's stamina regeneration (Keen, Apr 21, 2026); Patch 12 raised stamina regeneration on several foods and drinks (Keen, Dec 16, 2025). Update 8 also added three meat skewers, one per class, each boosting that class's main attribute early in the game, and 1.0 added more skewers for the Revelwood tier (Keen, Oct 14, 2026). Keen has not published a full food list or a "best food" ranking, as of Oct 21, 2026.
Cooking
Food is cooked over fires and at cooking stations, and each tier brings new dishes. Keen's 1.0 highlights say the new tier "brings equipment and food for the journey" into Cinder's Cradle. The changelog adds that 1.0 reworked the yield and production time of cooking stations, making recipes you need often more generous and faster, removed cooking from the Iron Fireplace ("It just didn't look convincing"), lets most food sit on plates and coasters as decoration, and starts the quest for the Seafood Grill only after you reach the Veilwater Basin (Keen, Oct 14, 2026). Fish became a cooking ingredient with Update 7 (Keen, Nov 10, 2025), and the Farmer lets you grow crops "to always have a stack of useful food at home" (Keen support). Stations are on Crafting Stations.
Water and drinks
Water is a resource you carry. Keen's beginner tips video of Feb 7, 2024 says you need water for some crafting, that enemies dropped it, and that a well near the start refills every two hours; two things have changed since. Water became simulated with Update 7: water pouches now have a fill level, cannot be stacked, and are filled at open water, wells, barrels and factories (Keen, Nov 10, 2025), and since 1.0 enemies no longer drop water pouches, which Keen called "a bit excessive" (Keen, Oct 14, 2026). Drinking water gives a stamina boost, and Game Rant's 1.0 tips suggest putting a well near your base (Game Rant, Oct 16, 2026).
The rested buff and comfort
Resting at home gives the rested buff, which raises maximum stamina and stamina regeneration, and the more comfortable your base, the longer it lasts (Game Rant, Oct 16, 2026). Keen's Melodies of the Mire highlights (Jun 5, 2024) add music to it: rescue Valory of the Silver Strings, learn to craft instruments, and playing at the campfire "adds to the rested bonus duration", while an instrument played in the wild lets you rest on the go. Comfort comes from categories of furniture and props such as chairs, benches, lights and hearths, and props of the same category do not fully stack (Keen, Jun 5, 2024). Update 8 made late-game comfort build up more slowly and greatly raised the comfort of boss trophies (Keen, Apr 21, 2026). Building a comfortable base is on Building Guide.
Two more buffs help between fights. Sleeping slowly restores health (Keen, May 13, 2025), and since 1.0 you can fast travel while sleeping in a bed. Traveling on roads gives the On The Road buff, which lowers sprint stamina use (Game Rant, Oct 16, 2026).
Cold, wet and exposed
The Albaneve Summits brought cold. Keen's Souls of the Frozen Frontier highlights (Nov 5, 2024) say the snowy region "transforms the way you approach combat and survival" and introduce dynamic weather, snow there and rainstorms elsewhere. At high altitude your body heat drains until hypothermia; warmer armor, food, campfires and torches help (Keen, Nov 5, 2024). Being wet or soaking wet lowers stamina and its regeneration (the Wet Dog skills halve the penalty), and going out at night without clothes makes you exposed, a stamina debuff Update 7 halved (Keen, Nov 10, 2025). Poison is cured with antidotes, not bandages, since Update 4.
Hunger and the Survival preset
Hunger is a world setting. With starvation switched on (it is off by default and on in the Survival preset), a hungry state lasts 5 to 20 minutes before you start starving, which drains health until you die (Keen support). The Survival preset, added with Back to the Shroud on Jul 29, 2024, also drops your whole backpack on death (Keen, Jul 29, 2024). World settings for servers are on Dedicated Servers.
