Enemies and Factions

Embervale's enemies are the Shroud-corrupted Fell, the creatures of the Shroud, the human Scavengers, the forest-dwelling Vukah, the undead Hollow of the Hollow Halls, the amphibious Drak of Veilwater Basin and the new, unnamed faction of Cinder's Cradle added in 1.0, plus hostile wildlife. 1.0 added 37 new enemy types and variants and made enemies recover health slowly instead of resetting when you die.

Enshrouded's enemies come in seven factions: the Fell, creatures twisted by the Shroud; the creatures of the Shroud itself; the human Scavengers; the Vukah of the forests; the undead Hollow; the lizard-like Drak; and a new faction in Cinder's Cradle, plus wolves, spiders and other wildlife. At 1.0, on Oct 15, 2026, the Update Highlights announce that "a new enemy faction awaits, and existing factions across Embervale have gained additional variants of their fighters, including new elites and heavy opponents". Keen's changelog counts 14 new types in that faction and 37 new enemies in all with the variants (Keen, Oct 14, 2026). Keen's pitch for the game is to "battle corrupted factions and deadly bosses twisted by the Shroud" (Keen Games press release, Jun 25, 2026).

The Fell

The Fell are creatures corrupted by the Shroud: the fog "infects creatures and turns them into hostile Fell beasts" (Destructoid, Jan 24, 2024). Most of the game's bosses are Fell: the Fell Thunderbrute, the Fell Wispwyvern, the Fell Monstrosity, the Fell Sicklescythe and the Fell Dragon Youngling. Keen's notes also name the Fell Sporehead of the Albaneve Shroud, Fell Vultures, whose talons go into the Flame, and shielded Fell soldiers (Keen, Dec 11, 2024; Keen, Oct 14, 2026). Fell nests spawn new enemies (Keen, Jan 28, 2025), and Fell foes in Veilwater Basin drop the Bursting Fell Heart. At night, groups of the Fell roam above the Shroud "trying to temporarily spread the Shroud" (Keen, May 13, 2025). 1.0's Fell Confusion Pheromones make Fell turn on each other.

Creatures of the Shroud

Inside The Shroud live its own monsters, and Thralls of Twilight (May 13, 2025) added many of them. Its highlights video names the Shroud Depthdweller "in fun-sized and not-so-fun-sized versions", the Shroud Stalker, the Fell Critter Queen with her offspring, "Tentacle Brain thingies", hazard slimes and the Shroud Gazer. Keen's notes add Shroud Banshees, Shroud Flayers, which come in waves from a Shroud Flayer Heart you must destroy, and Foggers in the deeper Shroud (Keen, Jun 5, 2025; Keen Games press release, May 13, 2025). Some apply curses or diseases, cured with crafted items. Shroud bulbs leave an area that drains your Shroud time fast, so TheGamer advises hitting them from range (TheGamer, Jan 24, 2024).

Fights in the Shroud look like this in Keen's first combat spotlight (Jun 5, 2023, before early access): with the health bar, hotbar and quest text on screen, the player fights in the dark blue fog of the Shroud against creatures that loom out of the mist.

Scavengers

The Scavengers are human raiders who hold camps across Embervale, each topped by a Scavenger Matron (PCGamesN, Jan 25, 2024). Souls of the Frozen Frontier (Nov 5, 2024) added new kinds: its highlights video names the Flamethrower Scavenger, with fire attacks, and the whip-wielding Champion, "who not only attacks but buffs allies". Keen's notes also name armored Scavengers and the Scavenger Tyrant, who whips other enemies and players (Keen, Jun 5, 2025). Thralls of Twilight brought "the new breed of Scavenger Hounds called the Pack Wolves" (Keen Games press release, May 13, 2025).

Scavengers own the night. The Thralls of Twilight highlights say "enemy patrols now roam the dark, offering opportunities for high-risk ambushes and valuable loot", that pack wolves can be captured under cover of night, and that 16 temples open only at night. Night patrols walk the roads with a Scavenger hound; 1.0 cut their damage to about 60% (Keen, Oct 14, 2026).

The Vukah

The Vukah are forest dwellers "who look friend-shaped, but are quite vicious" (Keen Games press release, Jun 5, 2024). They were in the game from the early access launch, and Melodies of the Mire (Jun 5, 2024) expanded them around the new Blackmire (Keen, Jun 5, 2024). Keen names Vukah Healer Shamans and Caster Shamans, both of which block melee, soldiers, a Vukah ranger and the Vukah Brawler, who leads large camps and is a quest boss (Keen, Nov 25, 2025). Vukah Shrines give a buff (Keen, Apr 21, 2026).

The Hollow

The Hollow are the undead of the Hollow Halls, "a new enemy faction" added with the dungeons on Mar 26, 2024 (Keen Games press release, Mar 26, 2024): skeletons that rise again from bone piles, summoned Hollow Hounds, Hollow Elites and the Hollow Cyclops. They drop Ectoplasm. Since 1.0 players can summon Hollow Skeletons of their own with a spell (Keen, Sep 23, 2026); see Magic and Spells.

The Drak

The Drak are the reptilian faction of Veilwater Basin, added on Nov 10, 2025. The Wake of the Water highlights call them "a reptilian species who fought humanity for control of the region for ages", who resurfaced "when the Shroud took over" and who, unlike you, "can actually fight underwater". PCGamesN describes big swords, long leaps and a Drak Heavy two to three times the player's height that covers the floor in obsidian spikes (PCGamesN, Nov 10, 2025). Keen names a Drak Wizard and a ranged Drak, and their leader Hydrak'Dal is a boss.

The Cinder's Cradle faction

1.0's endgame region brings "the completely new faction in Cinder's Cradle" with 14 enemy types (Keen, Oct 14, 2026). Keen has not named the faction, as of Oct 21, 2026. All the older factions gained new variants at 1.0, some heavy or elite (Keen, Sep 23, 2026).

Wildlife

Not every threat is a faction. Wolves, rabid near Scavenger camps, spiders, rats, bats and vultures live across the map; Cyclops roam caves, including in the Albaneve Summits; and Snapjaws live in the Blackmire, where they emerge from the ground, and in Veilwater Basin (Keen, Oct 14, 2026). Six peaceful species, and later more, can be tamed (Farming, Fishing and Animals).

Awareness, stealth and scaling

Since Forging the Path (Apr 21, 2026) enemies notice you in stages. Keen's press release says they move from suspicion to search to combat (Keen Games press release, Apr 21, 2026). In Keen's Update 8 combat video, combat designer David says the team reworked aggro "to improve enemy target selection", which "will lead into improved stealth", so that Enshrouded "can be played by stealth enjoyers". Enemy levels also scale with the size of your group (Keen, Feb 9, 2024), and 1.0 added an "Automatic" setting for enemy numbers in the world settings (Keen, Oct 14, 2026). See Combat.

What changed at 1.0

The biggest change to every fight at 1.0 is what happens when you die. The 1.0 Update Highlights say "Enemies no longer regain all their health instantly when you die. So coming back for another attempt at the boss doesn't mean starting from scratch." Keen's changelog: enemies now recover health slowly instead of resetting (Keen, Oct 14, 2026). The same update added the new faction, the variants, Effective and Resisted labels on hits, and a head trophy for every heavy-class enemy. More on What's New in 1.0.
