The Shroud

The Shroud is the corrupting fog over Embervale's lowlands in Enshrouded. Flameborn can survive in it only while a timer lasts, and red Shroud kills outright until your Flame level is high enough. It holds the Fell, rare materials and the Shroud Roots that give skill points.

The Shroud is the corrupting fog that covers Embervale's lowlands in Enshrouded: a Flameborn survives in it only while a timer lasts, and red Shroud kills you outright until your Flame level is high enough. Keen Games' Beginner Tips video sets out the difference: as you explore you may find areas of red Shroud, which "means your flame level is too low for that zone and stepping into it spells immediate doom"; to go on, return to your Flame Altar and strengthen the Flame. Blue Shroud can be entered, but only for a while, and everything worth the trip is inside it: rare materials, the Fell, Shroud Roots and many points of interest. How the Flame works is on Flame Altar and Flame Levels.

Thick fog tinted deep blue above and red below hides a ruined landscape. In the foreground a figure in dark armor and a hood holds out a torch with a red glowing tip. Broken stone walls, bare twisted trees and clusters of glowing blue crystals loom in the murk. The Enshrouded logo is at bottom left.

What the Shroud is

The Shroud is the fog that destroyed the old kingdom. Keen's support FAQ says the old world mined the earth for a magical Elixir and unleashed the fog and its corrupted creatures (Keen). Creative Director Antony Christoulakis told Game Rant in 2023 that rulers sought the Elixir underground and built the Elixir Wells, which opened the door for the fog. You are a Flameborn, joined to the Flame, which is what lets you survive in the Shroud at all. The story is on Story and Lore.

The fog also stood in for water in early access. Asked why "all the water" had turned into the Shroud, Keen's developers explained in their spring 2024 Q&A that simulating liquids in a changeable voxel world makes the problem "order of magnitude more complex", so water could not be in the early access version, "but we wanted to have natural barriers within the Shroud so we designed our lore around that". Real water arrived in November 2025 with the Veilwater Basin.

The Shroud timer

In blue Shroud a timer runs, and the way to stay longer is to plan for it. Keen's own tips: upgrade the Flame or learn the Inner Fires skill for more time, drink a Shroud Survival Flask before going in, look for "Shroud Time refills" in points of interest, remember the way you came in, and "catch some fresh air" on towers, in caves or anywhere above the fog (Keen). Hosts can scale the timer from 0.5x to 2x in the world settings.

1.0 changed the balance. Keen found that stacking several time extensions pushed the timer "very far into the background, especially in the late-game", so their overall effect was reduced, while hourglass capsules now appear "in many more places" and each gives about 70% more time; large Fell foes drop them too. Drinking a Shroud Survival Flask while its buff runs now extends it, and the new ranger skill Survival Instinct restores time when you kill a Shroud-infested enemy with a bow or dagger (Keen, Sep 23, 2026). Early access guides gave exact minutes (five at the start, one more per Flame level); Keen has not published 1.0 values, so they are not given here.

Red Shroud and the Flame

Red, or deadly, Shroud is the map's gate. Keen's world designer said in December 2024 that "the only reliable gating we have are the fog zones and their level" (Keen). Each Flame upgrade opens more of it; in early access, for instance, the canyon from the Springlands to Revelwood was deadly below Flame level 3. 1.0 improved the warning when you enter deadly Shroud ("That should mean less 'how did I just die?'") and fixed places where too-high Shroud had crept into areas it should not (changelog). The order of regions is on Progression Guide.

Thralls of Twilight: the Shroud reworked

The Shroud as it is now dates from Update 6, Thralls of Twilight, on May 13, 2025. "The Shroud's got a major glow-up," Keen's video says: denser clouds, deeper visibility and god-rays "blasting through the mist", which make it "way more likely to get you eaten". The Shroud also hides "a ton of goodies": 28 new crafting resources for things like armor tints, confusion grenades, beam spells, repair kits and cures for curses. You can even grow Shroud tentacles at your base in corrupted soil.

New horrors moved in with it: the Shroud Depthdweller "in fun-sized and not-so-fun-sized versions", the Shroud Stalker, the Fell Critter Queen with her offspring, tentacle brains, hazard slimes and the Shroud Gazer. "Keeping an eye on the remaining time in the Shroud will be vital," the narrator warns. Some Shroud enemies cause curses and diseases, which crafted cures remove; the curse chance is a world setting (Keen). The factions are on Enemies and Factions.

The update also filled the fog with places: Shroud Lairs, Summoning Nests "that will allow you to replay your worst horrors", abandoned ruins, and Gem Forges where you slot weapon gems, 21 of them at the time, whose crafting means "braving the Shroud to gather rare materials". Keen counted over 100 new points of interest in Shrouded zones. Since 1.0 a gem forge can also be placed in a late-game base (Weapons).

Night changed too: "Nighttime's no longer nap-time." Enemy patrols roam in the dark, packs of wolves can be captured, and 16 temples open only at night, each "a deadly challenge with powerful rewards". At night groups of Fell also spread the Shroud for a while (Keen). 1.0 cut the damage of Scavenger night patrols to about 60%.

Fighting in the fog has always been the core of it. Keen's combat video from June 2023, before early access, spends its first minute there: a Flameborn with the HUD up fights through dark blue fog among rocks, dodging and striking at Shroud creatures. Keen's tip for these fights: be ready, because enemies in the Shroud "can be quite strong", and bring a bow or staff, since some of them fly (Keen; Combat).

Shroud Roots and Elixir Wells

Shroud Roots are one of only two sources of skill points. Keen's Beginner Tips: "there are two ways to get skill points: leveling up by gaining XP and destroying the Shroud roots". Destroying a root clears the Shroud near it, and the points stay with your character in any world (Keen; Keen's FAQ). Each region has a "weeding" achievement for clearing all its roots (Steam). See Skill Tree.

The biggest roots sit at the bottom of Elixir Wells, large arched structures where a boss stands guard, as TheGamer describes them (TheGamer, 2024). The first is the one guarded by the Fell Thunderbrute in the Springlands; another, in the Kindlewastes, by the Fell Monstrosity (Bosses).

1.0 added more. Keen's highlights video says older regions were expanded "towards the map's edges with more Shroud roots for extra skill points", and the changelog counts 6 of them at the edges and 12 in Cinder's Cradle; the root achievements now include them, without taking an achievement from anyone who already had it.

Pushing the Shroud back

At the very end of 1.0 the Shroud can be pushed back. Unlocking the final Flame level 11, after beating "the biggest threat to the peace of Embervale", lets Flame Altars push the Shroud away from their area, and the required Flame level can be lowered in world settings (changelog). It does not end the Shroud: "Even after dealing with the most imminent threat, the Shroud still lingers." In 2024 Keen said it did not plan "a permanent end state for the game world" because replayability mattered (Keen's Q&A video).

Frequently asked questions

What happens when the Shroud timer runs out in Enshrouded? In Enshrouded you die: "The second the timer runs out, you will die," TheGamer's early access guide says, so leave the fog, climb above it or use an hourglass capsule before it ends.

How do I get more time in the Shroud in Enshrouded? In Enshrouded, upgrade the Flame, learn Inner Fires, drink a Shroud Survival Flask before entering, and pick up hourglass capsules, which in 1.0 give about 70% more time each.

Can I fast travel in the Shroud in Enshrouded? No. PC Gamer's early access guide says Enshrouded does not let you fast travel from inside the Shroud; climb out first.

What is red Shroud in Enshrouded? Red Shroud in Enshrouded is deadly fog that kills you outright when your Flame level is too low for it; upgrade the Flame to enter.

Where are the Shroud Roots in Enshrouded? Shroud Roots in Enshrouded sit deep in the Shroud in every region, the largest at the bottom of boss-guarded Elixir Wells; 1.0 added 12 in Cinder's Cradle and 6 at the world's edges.

Can you remove the Shroud in Enshrouded? Partly. At Flame level 11 in Enshrouded 1.0, Flame Altars push the Shroud back around them, but the fog stays in the world.
