Combat

Enshrouded's combat is real-time third-person action on a stamina bar: light attacks and hold-to-charge heavy attacks, blocking and parrying (some projectiles go back at the attacker), dodges and Blink with invulnerability frames, a stun bar that opens enemies to Merciless Attacks, and a focus bar for weapon special abilities. There is no PvP.

Combat in Enshrouded is real-time, third-person action: you swing light attacks, hold the button for a heavy attack, block or parry with a shield or ward, dodge with invulnerability frames, break an enemy's stun bar to land a Merciless Attack, and fill a focus bar to unleash your weapon's special ability, all on a stamina bar. Most of that is recent. Keen Games' Update 8 highlights (Apr 21, 2026) say combat got "a substantial amount of attention" because players asked for it: heavy attacks triggered by holding the attack button, special abilities you charge up, new two-handed attack chains for greatswords, and enemy awareness changes that open up stealth. Version 1.0 (Oct 15, 2026) then made stamina recover while blocking, aimed blocks with the camera and let heavy attacks hit several enemies (Keen, Oct 14, 2026). There is no PvP, and none is planned (Keen support); every fight is against the world's Enemies and Factions and Bosses.

Light and heavy attacks

A melee fight is a rhythm of attack chains between dodges. Keen's 2023 combat video shows it with the interface on screen: a sword fighter trading blows with a large brute whose red health bar runs across the top of the screen. Each weapon type has its own chain; Update 8 reworked the light chains for two-handed weapons and greatswords (Keen, Apr 21, 2026), and the weapon types are on Weapons.

Every melee weapon has a heavy attack, triggered by holding the attack button. In Keen's Update 8 combat video, combat designer David says it deals more damage and more stamina damage and makes you immune to staggering by small enemies, and describes it as a one-on-one or small-group tool. The changelog gives the numbers: double damage, double impact on the enemy's stun bar, and enemy attacks cannot interrupt it (Keen, Apr 21, 2026). Since 1.0 a heavy attack hits every enemy standing close together, not only the first, and wands have a heavy attack of their own that pierces enemies (Keen, Oct 14, 2026).

Air attacks and ledges were fixed in the same update. David explains that the upward slash is now a tap of the attack button in the air and the crash-down a hold, and that attacking at a ledge no longer carries you over the edge unless you move forward on purpose, which he notes helps mages casting near drops most. The skills behind them are Upwards Slash Attack and Crash Down Attack in the Skill Tree.

Focus and special abilities

Hitting enemies fills a focus bar, and a full bar unleashes your weapon's special ability. David explains that any attack fills the meter (light, heavy, even evade attacks), that special attacks give staggering immunity, hit harder than heavy attacks and add mobility or range, and that some weapons' specials hit an area for crowd control. Each weapon type's special must be unlocked with a skill, the pickaxe and wood axe have their own, and staffs had none in Update 8 (Keen, Apr 21, 2026). Since 1.0 the HUD tells you when your bar is full but you have not unlocked that weapon's special yet (Keen, Oct 14, 2026).

Blocking and parrying

A well-timed block is a parry, and some projectiles can be parried straight back at the attacker. Keen's video of Aug 19, 2026 on the 1.0 fixes reminds players that melee builds can reflect the Fell Dragon Youngling's rock projectiles to stun it, and says many players simply were not trying to parry them; 1.0 also added lore journal entries hinting at the trick (Keen, Oct 14, 2026). Several enemies can be parried at once with the right timing (Keen, Jul 29, 2024), projectile parrying arrived in Update 4 (Keen, Nov 5, 2024), and visual parry indicators followed in Update 5 (Keen, Jan 28, 2025).

Warriors block with shields; mages block with wards, which Keen calls "the mage shields" and which come with mana regeneration (Keen, Nov 10, 2025). Since 1.0 your stamina recovers while you block, and the block faces the camera direction rather than the way your character faces, to feel more responsive (Keen, Oct 14, 2026). The Kick skill lets you attack out of a block with any melee weapon to kick: it deals stamina damage and interrupts spellcasting (Keen, Nov 10, 2025).

The dodge roll has invulnerability frames since Update 8. David says players asked for them, that the roll no longer goes around enemies by default, and that rolling behind a target is a skill to unlock on the ranger side of the tree; the changelog names it Strategic Maneuver (Keen, Apr 21, 2026). Blink, a skill that replaces the roll with a short teleport, has the same invulnerability window and costs 20 stamina. A dodge with too little stamina is no longer refused: it happens with the stamina you have left. The basic evasion cost fell from 33 to 20 stamina in May 2025.

Stun and Merciless Attacks

Every enemy has a stun bar. Parries, attacks into an enemy's block, heavy attacks and stun arrows fill it (Keen, Jun 5, 2024; Keen, Apr 21, 2026), and when it is full the enemy is open to a Merciless Attack, a heavy finisher whose base bonus was raised to +500% in June 2024. Sneak Attacks hit unaware enemies. Game Rant's 1.0 tips note that neither works with bows or magic (Game Rant, Oct 16, 2026). 1.0 shortened how long enemies stay staggered, so they counter-attack sooner (Keen, Oct 14, 2026).

Stealth and enemy awareness

Enemies no longer know where you are by magic. David says aggro was reworked to improve enemy target choice and stealth, so that Enshrouded can be played by "stealth enjoyers". Since Update 8 enemies hear a noise, grow suspicious, start a search and fight only when they see you, with a widget above them showing their alert level; that lets you thin a camp before the main fight (Keen, Apr 21, 2026). Rain lowers enemy perception (Keen, Nov 5, 2024).

Damage types

Weapons and spells deal physical damage such as cut and pierce and elemental damage such as fire, ice and shock, and enemies resist some and take extra from others. When Keen reviewed every weapon in 2025, the Ice-Coated Daggers changed from cut and pierce to pierce and ice damage to match their look (Keen video, Oct 23, 2025). 1.0 reworked the susceptibilities of many enemies by faction and gave elites and heavies their own, and now shows "Effective" over an enemy only when it is at least 20% weak to your damage type and "Resisted" only at 20% resistance (Keen, Oct 14, 2026). Your armor reduces incoming damage by up to 80%; see Armor Sets.

Healing and dying

Losing a fight costs less in 1.0. Keen's Aug 19, 2026 video says dying no longer resets the health of the enemies you were fighting at once: they regain it slowly, so a death in a tough fight "doesn't always mean a complete do-over". The changelog confirms it for every enemy and says it matters most for bosses (Keen, Oct 14, 2026). By default you drop the materials in your backpack in a tombstone when you die (Keen support). Potions and the food that keeps you fighting are on Food and Cooking, spells on Magic and Spells, and how the moves combine into a playstyle on Best Builds.

Frequently asked questions

How do you parry in Enshrouded? In Enshrouded you parry by blocking with a shield or ward just as an attack lands; a parry fills the enemy's stun bar, can catch several enemies at once, and can send some projectiles, such as the Fell Dragon Youngling's rocks, back at the attacker.

How do you do a heavy attack in Enshrouded? In Enshrouded you hold the attack button with a melee weapon; since Update 8 the heavy attack deals double damage and double stun and cannot be interrupted, and since 1.0 it hits several enemies close together.

How do you stun enemies in Enshrouded? Fill the enemy's stun bar in Enshrouded with parries, heavy attacks, attacks into its block and stun arrows; a stunned enemy can be hit with a Merciless Attack.

Does dodging have i-frames in Enshrouded? Yes. Since Update 8 (Apr 21, 2026), Enshrouded's dodge roll and Blink both have short invulnerability windows.

Is there PvP in Enshrouded? No. Enshrouded has no PvP and Keen Games says none is planned; combat is against enemies only, alone or in co-op.

Do enemies heal when you die in Enshrouded? Since 1.0, enemies in Enshrouded regain health slowly after you die instead of resetting at once, so a quick return to a boss keeps some of your damage.

What does Effective mean in Enshrouded? In Enshrouded, "Effective" appears over an enemy when it is at least 20% susceptible to the damage type you hit it with; "Resisted" appears at 20% resistance.
