Flame Altar and Flame Levels
In Enshrouded the Flame Altar is your base's heart and a fast travel point; upgrading the Flame raises every player's stats, Shroud time and the number of altars you may place. 1.0 adds a Flame level needed for Cinder's Cradle (15 altars) and Flame level 11 after the final threat (16 altars, and altars push the Shroud back).
In Enshrouded the Flame Altar is the heart of your base and a fast travel point, and upgrading the Flame raises every player's stats, your time in the Shroud and the number of altars you may place; 1.0 adds a Flame level needed before Cinder's Cradle, which raises the limit to 15 altars, and a final Flame level 11 after the last threat, which raises it to 16 and lets altars push the Shroud back. Keen Games' Beginner Tips video explains the upgrade: go "to your altar of the flame and hit strengthen the flame", which opens parts of the map so you can progress safely, and gives character attribute bonuses that are global, so even friends at a lower level benefit and "jump into the action" with you. The fog it pushes against is on The Shroud.

Placing a Flame Altar
Place your first Flame Altar early: in 1.0 it is designed to give your first level-up. Building needs an altar, and you build within its area; the altar also becomes a fast travel point, so you can return to the base from any Ancient Spire or other altar (Keen; Glider, Grappling Hook and Fast Travel). In early access an altar cost five stones, and the game introduced it soon after the first cave. A Flame protects its base: ground fog does not appear there, "protected by the flame" (Keen, Mar 26, 2024).
Keen's tip is to place more altars as the limit grows, to have "more strategic Fast Travel Points everywhere around the world map (above the Shroud)" (Keen). Game Rant's 1.0 tips add: carry the materials for one so you can set a new point where you need it (Game Rant). How to build the base around it is on Building Guide.
What a Flame upgrade does
Upgrading the Flame does four things. It gives bonus stats to every player on the server, "a useful boost if they are stuck in an area with enemies that are too strong" (Keen); it lengthens the time you can spend in the Shroud; it raises the number of altars you may place; and it lets you enter Shroud that was red, and deadly, at a lower level. Keen's world designer called the fog zones and their levels "the only reliable gating we have" (Keen, Dec 19, 2024), so the Flame is the main key to the map (Progression Guide).
That makes an upgrade a help for the whole group: as Keen's Beginner Tips put it, the Flame's attribute bonuses are global, so a friend at a lower level who joins you gets them too. Each upgrade has its own sound and visual effect since Update 6 (Keen, May 13, 2025).
Flame levels through early access
The Flame's cap grew with each new region. At the early access launch it ended at level 6; Update 4, Souls of the Frozen Frontier (Nov 5, 2024), let the Flame "be upgraded twice to help you venture into deadly shroud zones", alongside a level cap of 35, as Keen's highlights video says. Update 7, Wake of the Water (Nov 10, 2025), allowed level 9, and 1.0 brought the last two.
In early access each upgrade needed a boss trophy, as TheGamer listed them on Feb 1, 2024: a Fell Thunderbrute Head for level 2, a Scavenger Matron Head for 3, a Fell Wispwyvern Head for 4, a Fell Monstrosity Head for 5 and a Fell Sicklescythe Head for 6 (TheGamer). Those are early access recipes; 1.0 changed the costs of levels 6 to 9 and has not published new lists, so check the recipe at your altar. The bosses are on Bosses, the first of them on Fell Thunderbrute.
Flame level 10 and 11 in 1.0
1.0 adds two Flame levels. The first must be unlocked before you can enter Cinder's Cradle, and raises the altar limit to 15 (changelog). The second, Flame level 11, comes after "besting the biggest threat to the peace of Embervale", and Keen's 1.0 highlights video sums it up: "The next Flame level raises your altar limit to 16." The changelog calls it "free real estate".
Flame level 11 also lets Flame Altars push back the Shroud: "You can finally show that fog who's boss", says the changelog, letting altars "shine in areas formerly unreachable". The required level can be lowered in the world settings, so a server can allow pushback earlier. The resources for Flame levels 6, 7, 8 and 9 were cut at 1.0, with Electric Organs and Poison Stings replaced by commoner materials, and Fell Vultures drop more Enshrouded Vulture Talons "for the next Flame level". Each Flame upgrade in 1.0 also unlocks the next tier's craftable Armor Sets.
The altar's other uses
The altar is where you respec. Keen's Beginner Tips say you will not unlock everything on one character, "however you can always respec your skill points at the flame altar in your base, so feel free to try things out". Since Nov 5, 2024 a reset costs 1 rune per spent point, and since January 2025 single skills can be refunded (Skill Tree).
Altars can be named. Melodies of the Mire (Jun 5, 2024) added "naming altars and bases so you can finally personalize your world even more", among its small improvements. Later updates gave altars more jobs: in Update 6, a base built over quest items lets you collect them once from the altar (Keen); in Update 7, altars hold an oxygen bubble underwater and can drain all simulated water from a flooded base (Keen); and in Update 8, one altar can be set as the spawn point for visitors to a shared world (Keen; Adventure Sharing and Sparkworks).
On servers, altars are a permission. The same update let hosts set roles with passwords; the rights in player bases include "adding or removing Flame Altars" and "upgrading the flame altars", as well as taking items from containers and building. 1.0 lets hosts promote or demote a player while playing (changelog; Multiplayer and Co-op).

Cinder's CradleCinder's Cradle is the endgame region added in Enshrouded 1.0 on Oct 15, 2026, north of Veilwater Basin, for characters of about level 45 to 50: lava wastes below and floating Ancient islands above, with 12 Shroud Roots, a new 14-type enemy faction, a new crafting tier and survivor, and the story's final fight high in the sky. -
The ShroudThe Shroud is the corrupting fog over Embervale's lowlands in Enshrouded. Flameborn can survive in it only while a timer lasts, and red Shroud kills outright until your Flame level is high enough. It holds the Fell, rare materials and the Shroud Roots that give skill points. -
Glider, Grappling Hook and Fast TravelEnshrouded has no mounts: you cross Embervale on foot, by glider (lifted by Updraft and air streams), by grappling hook, by swimming and diving (since Nov 10, 2025), and by fast travel between climbed Ancient Spires, your Flame Altars and, since 1.0, a bed you sleep in. -
Building GuideBuilding in Enshrouded is voxel based: inside a Flame Altar's area you place blocks, props and roofs with the Construction Hammer, terrain can be dug and raised anywhere, and since 1.0 the Airborne Architect skill lets you fly around your base while you build. -
Progression GuideIn Enshrouded 1.0 the regions run Springlands (levels 1 to 10), Revelwood (11 to 15), Nomad Highlands (15 to 20), Kindlewastes (20 to 30), Albaneve Summits (30 to 40), Veilwater Basin (35 to 45) and Cinder's Cradle (45 to 50), with the Blackmire as a Revelwood side area (13 to 15), and Flame upgrades gate each step. The level cap is 50. -
BossesEnshrouded's named bosses, in rough order of progression, are the Fell Thunderbrute, the Scavenger Matron, the Fell Wispwyvern, the Hollow Cyclops, the Vukah Brawler, the Fell Monstrosity, the Fell Sicklescythe, the Fell Dragon Youngling, Hydrak'Dal and, at 1.0, the story's final boss in Cinder's Cradle. Since 1.0 bosses regain health slowly after you die instead of resetting.
