Glider, Grappling Hook and Fast Travel

Enshrouded has no mounts: you cross Embervale on foot, by glider (lifted by Updraft and air streams), by grappling hook, by swimming and diving (since Nov 10, 2025), and by fast travel between climbed Ancient Spires, your Flame Altars and, since 1.0, a bed you sleep in.

Enshrouded has no mounts, so you get around Embervale on foot, with a glider, with a grappling hook, by swimming and diving, and by fast traveling to Ancient Spires you have climbed and Flame Altars you have placed. Keen's 1.0 launch trailer of Oct 14, 2026 shows the glider at work: two small figures sail under a natural rock arch across a sunlit desert canyon. Gliders and grappling hooks are crafted, and Keen's support tips stress one thing new players miss: both "need first to be equipped before they can be used" (Keen). No horse, mount or vehicle appears in any Keen post or in the 1.0 changelog (Keen, Oct 14, 2026).

Bright jungle daylight. In the foreground a figure in blue and brown armor flies through the air, legs swung forward, holding a rope that runs up to a glowing hook point at the top of a tall stone arch covered in green ivy. Through the arch a stepped temple ruin rises among palm trees, and a dark hulking creature stands among the ruins below. No game interface is shown.

The glider

The glider is your main way across Embervale's valleys and its Shroud. You craft it (Steam's achievement "Freefall" is for crafting or obtaining one), equip it, then open it in the air; jumping from an Ancient Spire or any height gives the longest flights (PCGamesN, Jan 30, 2024). The best is the Ghost Glider, with its own achievement, "Winged Victory" (Steam); in Souls of the Frozen Frontier the quest into the Albaneve Summits opened only once the Flame was at level 6 "and the Ghost Glider has been obtained" (Keen, Nov 5, 2024). 1.0 cut the Shroud Adhesive the glider needs (1.0 changelog).

Gliding has changed over the updates. Souls of the Frozen Frontier (Nov 5, 2024) brought "a reworked glider system", Keen's highlights video says, with air turbulence that now shakes flight paths; a world setting switches the turbulence off (Server Gameplay Settings).

Unlimited flight is not coming soon. Asked about endgame flight after Keen fixed an unlimited-flight trick, its developers said in Spring 2024 that "our current highest level glider is already powerful and we don't want to go for unlimited flight too quickly", while "thinking of other fun ways to mess with your glider".

Updraft and air streams

Updraft is a skill that lifts you while gliding. Since Forging the Path (Apr 21, 2026), "Updrafts will now build power over time when used in the wild", with the maximum height raised by 15% and near-instant lift kept inside bases.

Players disliked the charge-up. In Keen's "Things we're fixing for 1.0" video (Aug 19, 2026), the narrator says players "were very, very vocal" about it, so 1.0 adds a setting: "the old instant updraft, then the new slower one if you think gliders are OP." The 1.0 changelog puts it in the world settings and the game settings (1.0 changelog).

Natural air streams are the other lift. Since 1.0 they "can now not only push gliding players vertically upwards, but also to the side, forwards, backwards or even downwards", and 1.0 also stopped a laggy server from changing your flight path (1.0 changelog). Forging the Path had already added natural upstreams in the Kindlewastes, and the Albaneve Summits have updrafts for gliding.

The grappling hook

The grappling hook pulls you to hook anchors placed around the world: cliff tops, ruins, ceilings of dungeons. Steam's "Shortcut" achievement is for getting one. It is crafted, then equipped like the glider.

In combat it does more since Nov 5, 2024: it "can now pull flying enemies towards you or launch you into combat against larger foes", Keen's video says, once you unlock that in the skill tree. Wake of the Water added an upgrade that pulls you to anchors underwater and tears away debris and barricades (Keen). 1.0 lowered the stamina cost of hooking toward an enemy, smoothed the pull toward an anchor, and added hook anchors around the reworked Fell Dragon Youngling arena (1.0 changelog).

Double Jump and climbing

Double Jump is a skill, and since Forging the Path it sits "in the middle so you can grab it early", Keen's highlights video says. Game Rant's 1.0 tips put Double Jump and Updraft among the first skills to take once you have a glider (Game Rant, Oct 16, 2026). See Skill Tree.

Slopes changed at 1.0: walking or jumping up very steep slopes was reworked to stop bunny-hopping and sliding back, jumps on steep terrain cost a little stamina, and when you fall with no stamina left the game offers a respawn mid-fall (1.0 changelog).

Ancient Spires

Ancient Spires are the tall towers in every region. "Reaching the top ancient towers will unlock new locations on your map and give you an idea of where to go next", Keen's beginner tips of Feb 7, 2024 say, and lore pages and journals reveal points of interest too. A climbed spire becomes a fast travel point and the best launch for a long glide (PC Gamer, Jan 24, 2024).

Each region has one, with a Steam achievement for reaching it: Springlands, Revelwoods, Nomad Highlands, Kindlewastes, Albaneve Summits, Veilwater Basin and Cinder's Cradle (Steam); in early access the Low Meadows had one of their own (TheGamer, Feb 16, 2024). Some are puzzles: Veilwater Basin's has four floors of traps and puzzles and underwater sections (Game Rant, Nov 17, 2025), and 1.0 added save points to the Blackmire spire "to help in case the climb goes bad" (1.0 changelog). The Map and Regions page lists the regions.

How fast travel works

You can fast travel from the map to three kinds of place: the Cinder Vault where you start, any Ancient Spire you have climbed, and any Flame Altar you have placed. You cannot fast travel while you are in the Shroud (PC Gamer, Jan 24, 2024). Spires you find yourself stay with your character in other worlds, while spires found by others in a group do not (Keen FAQ).

Flame Altars are the fast travel points you choose. Upgrading the Flame raises how many you may have, which Keen's tips recommend: "Place more Altars to have more strategic Fast Travel Points everywhere around the world map (above the Shroud)" (Keen). At 1.0 the cap is 15 after the Flame upgrade needed for Cinder's Cradle and 16 at Flame level 11 (1.0 changelog); see Flame Altar and Flame Levels. Underwater, altars keep a bubble of oxygen so you can teleport and respawn there safely (Keen).

New at 1.0: "It is now possible to fast-travel while sleeping in a bed" (1.0 changelog).

Swimming and diving

Water came with Wake of the Water on Nov 10, 2025: "The ability to swim and dive in open water has been added to all Flameborn - no need to unlock it", while diving draws on a limited supply of oxygen, and weapons cannot be used underwater (Keen). Equipment and food can lengthen your time underwater, and the world setting playerDivingTimeFactor scales it from 0.5 to 2 (Keen).

Skills help: the same update added skills "that will help you swim longer, dodge attacks underwater, increase your resistances", Keen's highlights video says, among them Splash Dash, a forward lunge while swimming or diving. Veilwater Basin is the region built around water, with lakes, rivers and underwater ruins.

Frequently asked questions

How does fast travel work in Enshrouded? In Enshrouded you fast travel from the map to the Cinder Vault, any Ancient Spire you have climbed and any Flame Altar you have placed, and since 1.0 from a bed you sleep in. You cannot fast travel from inside the Shroud.

How do you change Updraft back to instant in Enshrouded? Since 1.0, Enshrouded has a setting for the Updraft charge time, including the old instant version; hosts set it in the world settings.

Can you swim in Enshrouded? Yes. Since Nov 10, 2025, every Enshrouded character can swim and dive without unlocking anything, limited by oxygen while underwater, and weapons cannot be used underwater.

How do you use the grappling hook in Enshrouded? Craft and equip the grappling hook, then aim at a hook anchor to pull yourself to it. Skills in Enshrouded's skill tree let it pull flying enemies to you or pull you to large foes.

Where are the Ancient Spires in Enshrouded? Every region of Enshrouded has an Ancient Spire, from the Springlands to Cinder's Cradle; climbing one reveals locations on the map and unlocks it as a fast travel point.
