Classes

Enshrouded has no classes to pick. One shared skill tree holds areas named Survivor, Beastmaster, Ranger, Assassin, Trickster, Athlete, Barbarian, Warrior, Guardian, Battlemage and Healer, and your points, weapons and armor make you a warrior, tank, ranger, assassin, mage, battlemage or healer. You can respec at any Flame Altar for 1 rune per point.

Enshrouded has no classes to choose: every character shares one skill tree, and your points, weapons and armor make you a warrior, ranger, mage or a mix, which you can change at any Flame Altar for 1 rune per spent point. Keen Games' 1.0 press release says the tree favors melee, ranged or magic "without being locked into a single class" (Keen, Oct 14, 2026). The word still means something in play: gear, survivors and the tree's own labels are built around archetypes. This page says which is which and how to choose; the skills are on Skill Tree and the routes on Best Builds.

A dark purple field holds hundreds of round skill nodes joined by lines, with lit paths branching from a central circle toward labels including Survivor, Beastmaster, Ranger, Assassin, Trickster, Athlete, Barbarian, Warrior, Guardian and Battlemage. Top left reads In use 58, Available 58. At right are attributes Constitution 20, Spirit 21, Endurance 20, Strength 21 and Dexterity 20. A tooltip reads Blink, Unlocked: replaces the Dodge Roll ability with a short-range teleport, cost 20 Stamina.

Quick facts

Fixed classes None (Keen)
Picked at the start? No; your first points decide
Change later Any Flame Altar, 1 rune per spent point
Gear makers Blacksmith: warrior; Huntress: ranger; Alchemist: mage (Keen)
"Best Overall" in one guide Battlemage (KeenGamer, Oct 17, 2026); no ranking from Keen
Skill points About 212 at most; not enough for the whole tree

The archetypes

Archetype Tree areas Attribute Weapons Upgraded by Guide
Warrior Athlete, Barbarian, Warrior Strength Greatswords, two-handed and one-handed Blacksmith Warrior Build
Tank Guardian, Warrior Strength One-handed and shield Blacksmith Tank Build
Ranger Survivor, Beastmaster, Ranger Dexterity Bow Huntress Ranger Build
Assassin Assassin Dexterity Daggers Huntress Ranger Build
Mage Trickster and the area early guides called Wizard Intelligence Staff and wand Alchemist Mage Build
Battlemage Battlemage Intelligence Wand, staff and ward Alchemist Mage Build
Healer Healer Intelligence Staff, with a wand for damage Alchemist Healer Build

The areas are those of the official 1.0 screenshot; the attribute grouping is TheGamer's of Jan 24, 2024, and Update 8 has since added "more paths between classes" (Keen, Apr 21, 2026), so read it as where things sit, not a fence. One area's label is hidden in that screenshot, and Keen has not confirmed its 1.0 name.

How armor makes the class

Armor sets carry the difference. In Keen's Update 8 video of Apr 14, 2026, designer Christoph explains that the warrior tank armor is tankier than the warrior fighter's, that mage armor has more magical than physical armor, and that a battlemage set has more armor than a damage-focused wizard set, "which is more like a glass cannon". Each survivor upgrades only its own class's gear, so switching class means a new set as well as a respec (Armor Sets).

Which class should I pick?

Pick by what you enjoy; no official ranking exists, and the press lists disagree in places.

  • Playing alone: KeenGamer recommends Battlemage, Ranger and Warrior for most solo players, and labels Battlemage "Best Overall", naming Blast and Cast, Wand Specialization, Unity, Wand Evasion Attack, Blink and Water Aura among its skills (KeenGamer, Oct 17, 2026).
  • Mages got the most at 1.0: nine new spell types, Eternal spells that use no charges and a wand heavy attack (Magic and Spells).
  • Melee stays simple: heavy attacks hit several close enemies since 1.0, and stamina recovers while you block (Combat).
  • In a group: tanks and healers matter more there. The healer's Water Aura and staff heals work on allies (Healer Build), and Keen says the Hollow Halls are "best visited with dependable friends" (Keen).
  • Your first levels: Game Rant advises committing to one archetype for about the first dozen levels, then going hybrid (Game Rant, Oct 16, 2026).

Which weapons the published lists rate highest is on Weapon Tier List.

Changing class

Respec is built in. Keen's Beginner Tips say one character cannot unlock everything, "however you can always respec your skill points at the flame altar in your base, so feel free to try things out". Salvaging spare gear gives runes for it (Tips and Tricks). A character made before 1.0 had its tree reset once when it first loaded in 1.0, so its points must be spent again (Keen).

The Class Outfit Packs in the Deluxe editions are outfits sold with the Deluxe Upgrade Pack, not classes: the skill tree is the same without them.

Frequently asked questions

What classes are in Enshrouded? Enshrouded has no fixed classes. Its one skill tree has areas for warrior, tank, ranger, assassin, mage, battlemage and healer play, and any character can mix them.

Which class is best in Enshrouded? Keen Games publishes no ranking. KeenGamer's 1.0 guide of Oct 17, 2026 calls Battlemage "Best Overall" and recommends Battlemage, Ranger and Warrior for most solo players.

Can you change class in Enshrouded? Yes. In Enshrouded you respec at any Flame Altar for 1 rune per spent point, and armor for the new class comes from its survivor: Blacksmith, Huntress or Alchemist.

Do you choose a class when you start Enshrouded? No. Enshrouded asks for no class at the start; your first skill points set the direction.

Can you be a hybrid in Enshrouded? Yes. Enshrouded's skill tree is one connected web, so a hybrid only needs a linked path; Game Rant suggests committing to one archetype for about a dozen levels first.

Is there a healer class in Enshrouded? There is a Healer area of the skill tree rather than a class: a healer is an Intelligence mage using staff heals and Water Aura.

Is there a necromancer in Enshrouded? Not as a class, but 1.0 added skeleton and totem summons with the skills Advanced Necromancy and Totem Mastery, on the mage side of play.
