Best Base Locations

Good Enshrouded 1.0 base spots sit on flat ground beside water and the resources of their region: Harvest Homestead or Woodgard in the Springlands, the Blue Goblet Tavern in the Revelwood, Shorewatch in the Kindlewastes, Rothstep in the Albaneve Summits and Driftwood Wake in Veilwater Basin. A Flame Altar claims a 40 m cube at first and up to 160 m when upgraded.

The best base location in Enshrouded is a flat, safe spot beside water and the materials of the region you are in, with your Flame Altar placed so its build area covers everything you want to keep: press guides written for 1.0 favor Harvest Homestead and Woodgard in the Springlands, the Blue Goblet Tavern in the Revelwood, Shorewatch in the Kindlewastes, Rothstep in the Albaneve Summits and Driftwood Wake in Veilwater Basin. Where the altar's area ends matters more than it looks. Asked in Keen Games' Spring 2024 AMA recap whether changes to the world could be saved, the developers answered that they had no plans "to remove the world resets outside of player bases", because saving everything would hurt performance and stability: what you dig or build outside an altar's area does not last. This page goes region by region and covers the rules; how building works is on Building Guide, and the altar itself on Flame Altar and Flame Levels.

Quick facts

Build area at altar level 1 40 by 40 by 40 meters (AllThingsHow)
Largest build area 160 by 160 by 160 meters, altar level 4
Altars per world 15 at the Flame level for Cinder's Cradle, 16 at Flame level 11 (Keen)
Not allowed Inside the Shroud; most former no-build zones opened at 1.0
Base raids None: "enemies are only interested in attacking the players" (Keen FAQ)
Changes outside a base Reset over time
Water limit per base 50 water dispensers at the highest Flame level
Farm animals per base 128, fish included

How big a base can be: the altar's build area

Every altar claims its own cube and is upgraded on its own. AllThingsHow's 1.0 table (Oct 21, 2026) gives four sizes:

Altar level Build area Cost Flame level needed
1 40 × 40 × 40 m The altar: 5 Stone 1
2 80 × 80 × 80 m 1 Shroud Core 1
3 120 × 120 × 120 m 5 Shroud Cores 2
4 160 × 160 × 160 m 5 Shroud Nexus 3

Treat the costs as a guide: a second AllThingsHow article of Oct 20, 2026 puts level 2 at Flame level 2, and Keen publishes no table, so read the Upgrade Altar menu before you farm. The Flame level itself sets how many altars the world may hold: AllThingsHow lists 2 at Flame level 1, 10 at level 5, then one more per level to 15 at level 10, which matches Keen's 15 before Cinder's Cradle and 16 at Flame level 11 (1.0 changelog). Shroud Cores are made at the Alchemist; see Crafting Recipes.

Three rules follow from this. Place the altar in the middle of what you want to build, because the cube is centered on it. An altar cannot be moved, and an upgrade does not carry over to a replacement, so choose before you spend Shroud Cores; you can deactivate an altar (it takes 30 seconds) and place it again elsewhere (AllThingsHow, Oct 17 and 20, 2026). And for a base bigger than 160 meters, set altars side by side so their areas overlap.

What makes a good base spot

  • Flat or ready-made. A ruin you renovate saves blocks; AllThingsHow's 1.0 tip is that placing and removing a 4 m foundation over settlement walls returns their blocks to your inventory.
  • Water. Wells and lakes supply crafting water, the seedbed and stamina drinks, and since Wake of the Water bases can hold simulated water (Farming, Fishing and Animals).
  • Materials. Stone recipes use the local region's stone since 1.0 (Keen), so a base in each region pays off.
  • Height. A base on high ground lets you start a glide from the front door (PC Gamer, Oct 20, 2026).
  • Off the road. Enemy patrols walk the paths; PC Gamer's Andrea Shearon was "caught unprepared and killed" near one.
  • Not inside the Shroud. An altar cannot be placed there, but a spot beside the fog puts Shroud Wood and Shroud Spores in reach.

Springlands

The Springlands are where most first bases go, and 1.0 reworked their terrain, so pre-1.0 spot lists may be out of date (Keen).

Spot Why, per the guide
Harvest Homestead, northwest of the Cinder Vault An abandoned farm a level 1 altar covers; corn fields for Plant Fiber (AllThingsHow)
Woodgard, north of Harvest Homestead Farmland and crops for early food, water, fishing, Flint and salt nearby (AllThingsHow)
Lake Retreat, east of Westcott A lakeshore with a fishing pier, near the Farmer's Ancient Vault and a Gem Forge (AllThingsHow)
Fort Kelvin, northern border A whole abandoned town with tunnels and a tower to restore (PC Gamer)
The pond west of Fort Kelvin An island in the water; patrols pass on the path (PC Gamer)
Mistbury Catacombs area The most central site, near the Hill of Scavengers and Glimmer Rock Mine (AllThingsHow)

Westcott itself is guarded by level 9 Scavengers, which AllThingsHow suggests clearing around character level 5 to 6, and at the Braelyn Bridge lakeside Fell creatures come at night once an altar is down (AllThingsHow, Oct 20, 2026).

Revelwood and the Nomad Highlands

In the Revelwood both guides pick the Blue Goblet Tavern: a three-story building on a plateau west-northwest of the Revelwood Ancient Spire, sunnier than most of the forest, with ore and clay nearby; a central altar covers the main floor, and one upgrade reaches the hidden cave below (AllThingsHow; PC Gamer). PC Gamer also likes the waterfall beside Glenwood's End, with "a fancy secret alcove", and AllThingsHow the area south of Pikemead's Reach for copper, hardwood and amber, with harder enemies.

In the Nomad Highlands, PC Gamer always puts an altar on top of the Pillars of Creation "for easy fast travel around southern Embervale": the northern pillar is easier to build on, the southern one has copper mines nearby. AllThingsHow calls the plateau a travel hub with routes south to the Springlands and west to the Revelwood.

Kindlewastes

Shorewatch is the pick of both guides for the Kindlewastes. PC Gamer calls it a "manageable" town in a region of oversized ones, in the sparse south where fast travel points are few, with a tower you can extend for higher glider jumps; AllThingsHow describes a pre-built desert palace with an indoor pool and furnished rooms, whose resident enemies must be cleared before the altar goes down. Sulfur, sand and iron are all Kindlewastes materials (Materials and Ores).

Albaneve Summits

The cold of the Albaneve Summits makes shelter and fire matter. AllThingsHow picks Rothstep, a village to claim after clearing its enemies, with a fishing pond, a cave and iron, silver, coal, amethyst, obsidian and granite nearby, and Bittermelt Lake, a partly frozen lake under a frozen waterfall, beautiful but hard terrain. PC Gamer settles in a lakeside cabin northwest of Hermit Lodgings, leaving that landmark's story untouched.

Veilwater Basin and Cinder's Cradle

Veilwater Basin is the water region, and its big towns come with waterwheels. PC Gamer chooses Riverreach, three levels across the biggest waterfall of Dragondream Lake, or the smaller Driftwood Wake across the lake, "closer to the water (and therefore better for fishing)"; AllThingsHow adds the Fish Farm, a pre-built base with fishing pools for expert players. For a base under or beside water, Keen's Wake of the Water highlights (Nov 10, 2025) note that water "passes through objects and props", so it added water barrier walls for "a secret entrance to your castle or a full-on Atlantis". Flame Altars always keep an oxygen bubble around them, so you can respawn safely under water (Keen).

No press guide we found recommends a base in Cinder's Cradle yet, as of Oct 28, 2026. Flame level 11, after the final threat, lets altars push the Shroud back and "shine in areas formerly unreachable" (1.0 changelog).

Defense, water and layout

Bases need no walls against raids. Keen's FAQ says enemies attack players, "not their bases or dwellings" (Keen FAQ), and creative director Antony Christoulakis told CGMagazine in September 2026 that base invasions are "not off the table", but they are not in 1.0 (CGMagazine). The Flame keeps ground fog out of its base (Keen, Mar 26, 2024).

The danger is at night, outside the walls. Keen's Thralls of Twilight highlights (May 13, 2025) say "enemy patrols now roam the dark", and 1.0 cut the damage of the Scavenger night patrols to about 60% of what it was (1.0 changelog). A base back from the road, with a bed for the night, avoids most of it.

Plan room for people and animals. Keen's Souls of the Frozen Frontier highlights (Nov 5, 2024) say tamed animals produce wool, milk, eggs and feathers "as long as they're fed and sheltered", and survivors need a sheltered bed each to be happy. AllThingsHow's 1.0 tips add that survivors' roaming range can be set down to 2 meters, that animal beds should stand clear of walls, and that a lakeside base can flood: flooded stations stop working and beds lose their owners, which the altar's "Remove Water" option fixes.

On a shared server, the base is protected by roles, not walls. Keen's Melodies of the Mire highlights (Jun 5, 2024) list the rights inside player bases: "taking items out of containers, building and removing blocks or props, terraforming as well as adding or removing Flame Altars". Give strangers the Visitor or Guest password; see Server Troubleshooting.

A layout that works, from AllThingsHow's 1.0 build guide: the altar in the main room, stations along one side with magic chests beside them (stations read magic chests anywhere in the base), an attic or wing with a bed per survivor, and one item from each comfort group (seating, light, carpet, wall decoration) for a longer rested buff. Put spare altars where you want fast travel: Keen's own tip is "more strategic Fast Travel Points everywhere around the world map (above the Shroud)" (Keen).

Frequently asked questions

What is the best base location in Enshrouded? For a first Enshrouded 1.0 base, press guides favor Harvest Homestead or Woodgard in the Springlands, with farmland, water and salt nearby; later regions have their own, such as the Blue Goblet Tavern (Revelwood), Shorewatch (Kindlewastes) and Driftwood Wake (Veilwater Basin).

How big is the Flame Altar build area in Enshrouded? An Enshrouded Flame Altar claims a 40 by 40 by 40 meter area at first; upgrading that altar raises it to 80, 120 and finally 160 meters per side, according to AllThingsHow's 1.0 table.

How many bases can I have in Enshrouded? Each Enshrouded base needs a Flame Altar, and a world can hold up to 15 altars at the Flame level for Cinder's Cradle and 16 at Flame level 11 in 1.0.

Do enemies attack your base in Enshrouded? No. In Enshrouded enemies attack players, not buildings, so a base needs no defenses; night patrols can still catch you outside it.

Can I build in the Shroud in Enshrouded? You cannot place a Flame Altar in the Shroud in Enshrouded, but from Flame level 11 altars push the Shroud back, and 1.0 opened most former no-build zones.

Can I move my Flame Altar in Enshrouded? Not directly: in Enshrouded you deactivate the altar, which takes 30 seconds, then remove it and place it again, and its area upgrade does not carry over.
